Title | Bullard, Sir Edward Crisp: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Date stamp on reverse. Citation typed |
Citation | Smithson Research Fellow of the Royal Society. Distinguished for his work on electron scattering, gravity determination, seismic survey, and measurement of heat out-flow from the earth's crust. Invented a method of rapid and accurate pendulum observation, and used it successfully on a gravity survey of East Africa which threw light on the structure of rift valleys. Devised and constructed apparatus for seismic surveying, and with it has determined the form and position of the Palaeozoic floor under a large area of Eastern England. In two expeditions at sea he has applied this method to the study of the nature of the continental shelf, and has obtained valuable results. Has made determinations of thermal conductivity and vertical temperature gradient, both in Great Britain and at Johannesburg, which have removed much of the uncertainty that affected previous estimates of the rate of out-flow of heat from the earth. |
