| Citation | Sir William Dunn Reader in Biochemistry. Dr Needham was a pioneer in this country as a student of Chemical Embryology, and he has become a leading authority on that branch of science. His exhaustive treatise on the subject, published in 1931, awakened a widespread interest in the chemical problems presented by developing organisms, and has greatly encouraged their systematic study by modern methods. His first original publication appeared in 1923. Has studies of 'Energy Sources in Ontogenesis' and related investigations, have been concerned with almost every aspect of metabolism in avian and invertebrate embryos and have established facts and relations of fundamental importance. With C H Waddington he has studied the chemical aspects of the influence of the amphibian organisation centre. His work has thrown light on many other sides of chemical embryology. |
