| Citation | Professor of Chemistry (Organic), University of Liverpool. Distinguished as an organic chemist who has investigated a series of Natural products, chiefly derivatives of polyhydric phenols, bu analytic and synthetic methods. He has made important contributions to the synthesis of glucosides, including the anthocyanins, indican, rubiadin glucoside, gaultherin, primeverin, etc. He has developed the chemistry of natural coumarins, chromones, lichen acids, rotenone, etc. Much of our knowledge of sumatrol, picrotoxin, xanthoxyletin, euparin and similar plant products is due to him. He has also worked in terpene chemistry and much along general synthetic lines. His investigations are accurate and of far-reaching importance. |
