Citation | Reader in Thermodynamics, University of Oxford. Ex-Extraordinary Professor of Physics, University of Berlin, later Professor of Physical-Chemistry, Technische Hochschule, Breslau. Naturalised British subject, 1939. Distinguished for his work in Thermodynamics including a new formulation of the 'Third Law' now generally accepted. Also worked on 'Frozen Phases,' 'Internal Transition,' liquid Helium II and above the critical point. Has developed two new simple methods of liquifying Helium and methods of studying the properties of matter at very low temperatures. Has determined low temperatures on the absolute scale. He has built up a very active school of Low Temperature Research in Oxford. |
