Citation | Assistant Director at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research, Melbourne, Australia. Distinguished for numerous researches with avian and mammalian viruses, eg, those of infective laryngostracheitis of fowls, canary-pox, fowl pox, influenza, louping-ill, vaccinia and infectious ectromelia of mice. He studied on the chorio-allantoic membrane of the developing egg by an improved technique that he devised, the interaction between a number of viruses and their appropriate antisera, and obtained data of great theoretical importance. He has added extensively to our knowledge regarding bacteriophages and the factors which influence lysis of organisms by their agents. His studies with staphylococcal toxin and 'Hoemophilus pertussis' are also important contributions. |
