| Citation | Lecturer on Biochemistry in the University of Cambridge. Distinguished for his work on tissue respiration and respiratory catalysis. Of his many contributions to this subject his papers dealing with the xanthin oxidase for instance are of outstanding merit, constituting one of the most complete studies yet made of an important oxidation-reduction system functioning in living cells. Important in their general bearings are his studies of the agencies which inhibit tissue respiration, and his work on the properties of glutathione is of high merit. He has recently made a significant contribution to our knowledge of tissue catalysis in making clear the distinction between the functions of mutases and dehydrogenases. Dixon has made valuable contributions to the improvement of manometric technique, and in a book has provided the first theoretical and practical account of the whole subject. |
