| Citation | Physician and Director of Special Research, Hospital for Tropical Diseases, London. Formerly Tata professor of Tropical Medicine, Bombay. Chief contributor to knowledge of immunity reactions in helminthic infections, showing that stages of helminth (schistosoma) in invertebrate host (snail) yields an antigen reacting with serum of infected vertebrates. Discovered stable helminthic antigens for complement fixation in schistosomiasis (cercarial antigen), echinococcosis (scolex antigen) and filariasis, and established group nature of these reactions. Added much to knowledge of spruce, blackwater fever, mammalian schistosomiasis, hydatid daughter cyst formation and biting mechanism of Australian snakes. His work in advancing tropical medicine as a clinical science is outstanding, and his recent discovery of pseudo methaemoglobin, which since the time of Hoppe-Seyler has been mistaken for methhaemoglobin, has opened a new chapter in the blood pigment metabolism of man. |
