Citation | Assistant Professor and Reader in Chemical Technology, Imperial College. Was the author of 12 communications to 'Proceedings' (1923-1931) on combustion at high pressures, partly with W A Bone, F R S, in charge of experimental work relating thereto leading, 'inter alia', to discovery of activation of nitrogen in CO/air mixtures; also of a number of other papers on combustion of hydrocarbons aromatic and aliphatic, establishing the production of phenols and alcohols; equilibrium measurements relating to methanol synthesis (Proc Roy Soc 123, 236, 1929), formation of mixed ethers (Proc Roy Soc 157, 348, 1936) from alcohols and olefines at high pressure. Recognised as authority on high pressure technology (Moulton Medal, Institution of Chemical Engineers), having contributed to design of equipment withstanding 20,000 atmospheres, and systematically studied organic reactions at very high pressures. Is author of books on combustion at high pressures (jointly with W A Bone and D T A Townend) and Pt III, 'Chemie Ingenieur' (Akad Verlag, Leipzig, 1938). |
