| Citation | University Lecturer. Distinguished for his contribution to the electronic theory of metals, insulators and semi-conductors. He has given a theory of insulators on the hypothesis that insulators are essentially different from poorly conducting metals because the conduction electrons in insulators form closed shells, while they form open shells in metals. He has developed this theory to include semi-conductors, with particular reference to the influence of impurities, and to the recrifying properties of contacts. All this is theoretical work of first-class importance. He is still actively prosecuting it. He has also made important advances in the theory of the optical properties of metals, of diamagnetism, and of the thermal conductivity and of the thermo-electric effects at low temperatures. |
