Citation | Distinguished for his brilliantly original contributions to Metallurgy. Many papers in the 'Proceedings of the Royal Society', 'Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute', 'Journal of the Institute of Metals'. Has studied order-disorder transformation and devised elegant methods for measurement of thermal effects in alloys; precipitation hardening in duralumin copper-silver and copper beryllium alloys. His investigation of Cu3Au by X-rays and other physical methods is a classic. Responsible for industrial development of X-ray tubes, continuously evacuated valves, diffusion pumps, and very important work on production of hard metals. Combines highest scientific ability with wide practical experience of industrial problems. |
