Citation | Distinguished for his researches in Physiology, largely in collaboration, in later years with his pupils, and dealing mainly with three problems:- (1) Relation of velocity of pulse wave in man to arterial tension and elasticity; (2) movements of stomach, their control by vagus and sympathetic nerves, and relation of effects to those of drugs - a series masterly in detail, precision and objectivity, of which instalments appeared in every year from 1924 to 1936; and (3) sensory impulses and pathways from abdominal viscera, revealing a new and unsuspected path from vagus to thoracic spinal roots - begun in 1935 and steadily progressing to the present year (1939). Has conducted an important survey of physical training and education in European countries, and reported to a League of Nations Commission. |
