Description | Citation typed. |
Citation | Marrian, Guy Frederic DSc (Lond) Professor of Medical Chemistry in the University of Edinburgh. Distinguished as a biochemist and particularly for his work on female sex hormones and related compounds. His isolation of oestriol was the first successful attempt to obtain this natural oestrogen in the pure state; in the course of this work he also isolated the important substance pregnandiol, and made significant contributions to the chemistry of oestriol. Later Marrian made the important discovery that a large proportion of the oestriol in pregnancy urine is in the form of a water-soluble glucuronide, which he isolated in the pure state. Recently he has obtained several compunds from the urine of patients with adrenal tumour (pregnanetrio, isoandrosterone etc) which may throw new light on the metabolism of steroids. |
