Citation | Distinguished for his researches on the relation of texture of sediments to oil accumulation, and for refinements of stratigraphical methods applied to interpret the structure of oil bearing lands. Has travelled widely in Europe Africa and the Americas, gathering new knowledge which has led to the discovery of large oil fields in the lower Miocene of the Orinoco epi-continental basin. His palaeontological work on the Middle Cambrian of England is of outstanding merit. He initiated the Department of Oil Geology at the Imperial College, and has fostered its development to its present standing as the leading school of oil technology in the British Empire.
