Citation | Distinguished for his work in mathematical statistics, especially in a) ethnography, b) the principles of agricultural experimentation, c) the technical development of methods of sampling survey. Mahalanobis was a pioneer in the methods of treating multiple measurements, of which his work in ethnography stressed the importance. He and his assistants have made notable contributions to these problems, which pervade also the work of his Department. The Statistical Laboratory, which he founded in Calcutta, The Indian Statistical Association, and Indian Statistical Journal, "Sankhys", constitute achievements of major importance for the future of mathematical statistics in India. His personal researches are penetrating on the theoretical side, while his cooperative projects have the utmost practical value. |
