Description | Date stamp on reverse. The list of publications mentioned in the citation in not attached to the certificate. |
Citation | Distinguished for his work on the nervous system of vertebrates and invertebrates. Of special interest are his comparison with the mammal of the autonimic systems of teleosts and selachians, and of the nerve supply of the iris; also the function of the pineal eye, and the presence of light-sensitive receptors, in the tail, connected with the lateral nerves in the lamprey. His studies on cephalopods have greatly advanced our knowledge of the structure and function of the ganglia and nerve tracts, and their relation to bahaviour. In particular his work on giant nerve fibres, fused neurons, synaptic contacts, and nerve sheaths has contributed towards the understanding of this functioning of nerves in general. A list of publications is appended. |
