Title | Jackson, Derek Ainslie: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his knowledge of Spectroscopy, especially of the hyperfine structure of spectral lines. First measured nuclear magnetic moment (1928) of Caesium. Later measured nuclear magnetic and mechanical moments of Gallium, Indium, Caesium and Thallium. First successfully used method for reducing Doppler width to insignificance by observing spectra of atomic beams. Thus measured very small magnetic moments of Potassium 39 (1934) and later silver 107 and 109, potassium 41 and Lithium 7. Measured Zeeman effect of these elements and of Sodium thus finding sprectroscopicably nuclear magnetic moments, finding agreement with Darwin's calculations. (publications: Numerous Papers Proc. Roy. Soc., Z. f. Physik, etc) |
