Title | Krebs, Sir Hans Adolf: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | By elucidating a number of intermediary reactions in the metabolism of nitrogenous substances and of carbohydrates, and by devising and elaborating methods for the study of cell metabolism, Krebs has made outstanding contributions to our knowledge of chemical processes in living cells. The main reactions he has studied are (10 synthesis of urea in the liver ("ornithine cycle"): (2) deamination of amino-acids: (3) synthesis and hydrolysis of glutamine: (4) oxidative breakdown of carbohydrate ("tricarboxylic acid cycle"): (5) carbon dioxide assimilation in heterotrophic organisms. His views on (40 and (5) have been, in large part, recently confirmed by others, using the isotope technique. |
