Title | Moon, Philip Burton: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his work on neutrons of thermal energy and on the selective absorption of neutrons. The proof that neutrons could reach thermal equilibrium with matter and hence could be heated or cooled by passing through suitable substances at different temperatures led to outstanding developments in nuclear physics, as did the discovery of the phenomenon of selective absorption. The candidate has made important contributions to the problem of surface ionisation. Since the war began he has contributed largely to the solution of certain radio problems, particularly those connected with fundamental noise in receivers at very high frequencies. |
