Title | Whittle, Sir Frank: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Entering the RAF as an aircraft apprentice by exceptional merit he was awarded a Cadetship for the RAF College Cranwell, where his mind turned to jet propulsion on which he presented a thesis in his final year. His ideas & investigations took definite form in 1929. He worked on his proposals continuously & to increase his scientific and technical weapons entered Cambridge University in 1934 & obtained first class Honours in the Mechanical Tripos in 1936. He remained a further year during which he was engaged in research under Sir Melville Jones directed to jet propulsion & was then put on the special duty list in 1937 to pursue his inventions. The development of the Whittle Jet propulsion system was peculiarly his personal work in invention, research, design and development and has had, and will have, a profound influence on power plant development and that of the aeroplane. His work and reports are secret. |
