CitationDistinguished for valuable investigations on the physical properties of surfaces, including: study of the potential at a solid-liquid interface and the mechanism of deposition of ions on metallic surfaces; study of the physical and chemical processes which occur during the rubbing and impact of solid surfaces, and the mechanism of friction, lubrication, and wear; methods for measuring the surface temperature of sliding solids and the real area of contact; study of the phenomena of polishing, surface flow, and formation of the Beilby layer. Since 1939 has done important war work for Australian Government.
