Title | Farmer, Ernest Harold: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his researches on unsaturated hydrocarbons and their derivatives, and particularly for his investigation of the reactive tendencies of unconjugated polyene substances in non-polar surroundings. His studies of autoxidation and the primary peroxidation mechanism of the polymeric hydrocarbons, vegetable and animal oils, and simple olefins are widely recognised. His elucidation of alpha-methylenic reactivity, and its importance in promoting molecule linking, vulcanisation and non-polar substitution, is especially noteworthy, as also his discovery of the olefin-phenol-formaldehyde reaction. Earlier investigations include the properties of conjugated compounds, the mechanism of low-molecular polymerisation, and the constitution of natural polyene acids. |
