| Citation | In his earliest research Hodgkin made a notable advance in the theory of nervous conduction. He gave the first definite proof that the electrical response is essential to the spread of excitation: he was able to explore the quantitative aspects of the conduction process and to give a new precision to the whole subject. A second equally important result is his proof that the membrane theory of nerve potentials in inadequate and all his later work has been marked by the same originality and power. During the war he helped to develop the use of radar from aeroplanes and he is now directing a research team on the bio-physics of the nerve. |
