Citation | Distinguished for his researches on carbohydrates, the more noteworthy being: a new formula for glucose (1926), constitution of maltose (1926), xylan (1937), anhydro-sugars (1938), cellulose (1938-39, configuration of glucosamine (1939), polysaccharides of beta-amylase (1941), yeast mannan (1941), agar (1942), alpha-amylodextrin, amd amylolytic degradation of starch, (1937-41). He has shown that the starch polysaccharide synthesised by Hanes is constituted as a continuous chain of glucose residues which has now been recognised as amylose. Having devised a new and facile method of separating starch into its pure components, amylose (25%) and amylopectin (75%), he has now crowned this work by the enzymic synthesis of amylopectin, the major component of starch. |
