Title | Bawden, Sir Frederick Charles: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his researches on plant viruses and virus diseases, in collaboration with N. W. Pirie he has identified a number of plant viruses and virus strains as nucleoproteins and the isolations of tomato bushy stunt virus gave the first fully crystalline preparation of a virus. Has made definite advances in the serology of plant viruses and has shown that there exist serological relationships between apparently distinct viruses. Particularly important has been the discovery of new ways of inactivating viruses without destroying their antigenicity. A further contribution to serology has been the explanation of the difference between the behaviour of somatic and flagellar type antigens. A list of scientific papers from 1932 is appended. |
