CitationDistinguished for his contributions to petrogenesis, especially in recognising the coqual importance of tholeiite with olivine-basalt as a parent magma; in vulcanology, in discovering composite lava-flows; and in tectonics, in ascertaining that the Great Glen Fault is a wrench with lateral displacement of 64 miles, and in identifying for the first time recumbent folding in the Lewisian rocks of the West Highlands. He has also made important contributions to the study of zonal regional metamorphism in the Moine Schists. During the war his services in locating certain essential minerals in Scotland has been of outstanding value.
