Citation | His first contribution was to provide the experimental test, by X-ray treatment, of the time of reproduction of the chromosomes. His second contribution lay in the analysis by new methods, of crossing-over data in terms of chiasma formation, and the consequent elaboration of the present theory of gene distribution in polyploids. His third and main field of work has been the development of the experimental technique and theoretical interpretation of quantitative inheritance, both in species and in species crosses. He has shown that the genes involved, indetectable as individuals, exist in systems balanced by natural selection within each chromosome, and sometimes lie in the otherwise inert heterochromatin. In numerous essays and books he has successfully shown the application of these principles to the understanding of the control of recombination and of breeding systems, to the theory of evolution and to the practice of plant and animal breeding. |
