Citation | Distinguished for his contribution to modern methods of computation. The value of this subject, both as a branch of Mathematics and as a service to Science, has been increasingly recognised in recent years. He is personally distinguished for his mechanisation of scientific calculation with the aid of commercial calculating machines, and in particular for his improvement of finite-difference methods by the application of multi-register machines. Also for his contributions to the art of constructing and presenting mathematical tables. He has done much to stimulate interest in this field, and is internationally recognised as a leading authority in this branch of science. |
