Title | Martin, Archer John Porter: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | First example of new clause printed at head of certificate in red: 'Please state nationality of candidate (cf Statute 17)'. Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished as a biochemist. Was responsible with R. L. M. Synge, for the development of partition chromatography in the general field of amino acid analysis of proteins. His introduction, with Consden and Gordon, of filter paper (strip) chromatography, was an outstanding advance which has been extended in recent years to nearly all families of low-molecular organic substances. Martin has evolved several other ingenious methods for the separation of amino acids and peptides, which he has used with success in investigations in the structure of wool keratin; he has also made fundamental contributions to the study of felting in wool. |
