Title | Toit, Petrus Johann Du: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to the study of the diseases of animals, especially of domestic cattle, and particularly those due to soil deficiencies and to infections transmitted by ticks. He has been author of more than 100 articles in European and South African journals dealing chiefly with zoological and veterinary researches of his own. A list of these is attached. Dr. du Toit's claim, however, must be based more particularly on the outstanding success with which he has directed and organised the researches at the South African Veterinary Research Institute, Onderstepoort, which, under his Directorship beginning in 1927, has become one of the greatest veterinary research institutions in the world. Dr. du Toit has done much to assist other African territories in the prosecution and application of veterinary research, and has served on many important commissions dealing with University Education, Medical Education and the Preservation of Historical Monuments in south Africa; he is a member of its Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. He is a member of the standing committee on Agricultural Science of the F.A.O. He has been an official delegate to many international conferences on veterinary science and on sciences bearing on Agriculture and Nutrition. He served in a part-time military capacity during the recent war in connection with remount matters. |
