| Citation | Professor Mitchell's main contributions to science are as follows.
1. He examined the mechanism of the action of therapeutic doses of ultra-violet radiation on the skin, utilising data accumulated from work on monolayers and ultra violet absorption of the proteins.
2. He demonstrated that therapeutic doses of X and gamma rays produced in tumour tissue disturbances of the cellular nucleic acid metabolism.
3. He evaluated and the tolerances for fluxes of fast and thermal neutrons and predicted and verified experimentally that the relative biological efficiency per ion pair for fast neutrons increased with the exposure time.
4. He was the first to suggest the use of Co 60 which is easily made in a pile as a substitute for radium in radio-therapy.
5. He has demonstrated the possibility of improving clinical results of palliative radio-therapy of cancer by the use of chemotherapeutic agents.
