TitleBarcroft, Henry: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his researches on the physiology of the circulation of the blood. Professor Barcroft's earlier investigations dealt with methods of measuring the rate of blood flow and with the distribution of blood between the pulmonary and systemic circulations under experimental conditions. They provided him with basis and equipment for the major group of researches, extending now over the past eight years, in which, with a series of collaborators, he has built up an important body of knowledge concerning the width of the vascular bed and the rate of circulation through the muscles of human limbs, and the changes produced by mechanical factors and by nervous and hormonal control, in relation to muscular activity, haemorrhage, fainting, shock and other conditions. The results of this still progressive series of researches are providing material for the rewriting of a chapter of human physiology with authoritative detail.
Professor Barcroft has continued his important researches on these lines, with growing distinction, since the first Certificate was presented in 1948.
