| Citation | C. S. Elton was largely instrumental in founding the Bureau of Animal Population, Oxford. He has played a leading part in the development of Animal Ecology as a distinct branch of biology, with its own methods and principles. His main work has been the analysis of animal numbers, with special reference to their periodic fluctuations. He has developed important new ideas concerning evolution and selection in nature. This has resulted in much valuable further work, largely his own or under his immediate direction, in pathology, in new methods of ecological survey, and in practical pest control. A list of publications is appended. |
