Citation | Dr F.C. Frank is distinguished for his contributions to the understanding of crystal growth and of plastic deformation of crystalline solids, and to the general theory of defects on crystals. He was the first to point out that growth from the vapour or solution by processes involving the formation of successive surface nuclei would be impossible for low degrees of supersaturation, and that under these conditions growth would only occur in crystals containing screw dislocations. He predicted many of the complicated spiral forms that growth steps on crystal surfaces have since been shown to have. He is also in charge of a group of experimental workers who have published work on the examination of these growth steps on beryl, cadmium iodide and other crystals. In the field of plastic deformation, he was the first (in collaboration with W.T. Read) to give a satisfactory model of the origin of slip bands. In addition, in collaboration with one of his students, he was the first to describe grain boundaries in terms of dislocations and thus to give a theoretical estimate of grain boundary energy. He has made many other contributions to the theory of dislocations in solids. |
