Title | Corner, Edred John Henry: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to Mycology and to the anatomy, biology and taxonomy of Flowering Plants. As assistant director of the Gardens, Straits Settlements, 1929-46, he made extensive botanical explorations and ecological observations, amassing large collections which are being used for the new Flora Malesiana. He has already published papers revising the taxonomy of eastern members of the important genus Ficus, with new details of their floral structure. In studying the trees of Malaya, he surmounted one of the major difficulties of the botanist in the Tropics by training monkeys to collect flowers and fruits, from the tall trees of the high forest regions. His published work on the fungi, especially his great monograph on Clavaria and allied genera, has given him an international reputation as an authority on the taxonomy of the higher fungi and on their morphology and biology. His recent studies on fruits and seeds have opened up a new field of research and have considerably stimulated enquiry into the evolution of the Angiosperms. A list of his books and papers is appended. |
