Title | Cottrell, Sir Alan Howard: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Distinguished for his researches, theoretical and practical, concerning the physics of metals, especially their mechanical properties. His work on the migration of solute atoms in metals and their effect on the behaviour of dislocations has explained many phenomena of yield, creep and hardening. He was the first to carry out a systematic investigation of the flow of metal single crystals under constant stress and his research on the occurrence and mechanism of the yield point is important. His books Theoretical Structures Metallurgy and Dislocations and Plastic Flow in Crystals contain, besides critical assessment of modern investigations on the subjects, much that is constructive and are of great value. A list of publications is appended. |
