Title | Downie, Allan Watt: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Distinguished microbiologist. His earlier researches, which were concerned with various bacterial species - pneumococcus, streptococcis and staphylococcus - have added materially to our understanding of human disease due to these micro-organisms and of the mechanism of the immunity which can be acquired or produced artificially to them. His more recent work has been devoted almost exclusively to a study of the animal viruses and more particularly of those belonging to the pox group. His observations on the antigenic structure and interrelationship of these viruses are of fundamental importance. He is a stimulating teacher and has created an active research department at Liverpool. |
