Title | Fleck, Alexander, Baron Fleck of Saltcoats: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished as a chemist and pioneer of chemical industry. Early work on chemistry of thorium and uranium-X provided experimental foundation for ideas on isotopes, the alpha and beta law, and movements of isotopes within the periodic system, which were developed by Soddy. Scientific studies bearing on industrial problems are exemplified by the following. Properties of sodium and sodium hydroxide related to mechanisation of the electrolytic process; studies of modified electrolytic processes; properties of trichlorethylene; properties of calcium sulphate; studies of indigenous deposits of potassium salts. He applied scientific knowledge to the integration of large sections of the British chemical industry. |
