Title | Hawthorne, Sir William Rede: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Distinguished for his researches in the combination of thermodynamics and hydrodynamics on which the design of high speed heat engines is based. By extending Froude's conception of a propeller as an "actuator disc" to include thermodynamic changes in axisymmetric flow he and his co-workers have added to our understanding of such machines. He has studied flames and the mixing of gas streams in combustion chambers. Recently he has studied secondary flow in hydraulic channels and in turbines. He has applied this knowledge to river flow round piers of bridges and shown how to avoid the scouring action of secondary flow. |
