CitationDistinguished for a highly original investigation of the physical properties of living cells and for an important analysis of the function of fins in fishes. More recently he has made important contributions in a number of other fields, including the chemistry of intra-vitam staining, the vertical migration of planktonic organisms and the development of behaviour patterns in young fish embryos. During the war he was the Head of the Research Unit of the Iron and Steel Institute, making important observations on the factors which influence the attachment of marine organisms to the hulls of ships. A list of publications is attached.
