Citation | Distinguished for his researches at very low temperatures, in particular for his contributions to the understanding and technique of the magnetic method for reaching temperatures of the order of a few thousandths of a degree absolute. Took a leading part in the very difficult experiments which for the first time succeeded in aligning atomic nuclei at very low temperatures and which have already begun to yield results of great interest to nuclear physics. Was during the war responsible for some essential contributions to the scientific foundations of the gaseous diffusion method for separating isotopes. |
