Title | Wilkes, Sir Maurice Vincent: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to the design and construction of automatic calculating machines, and to the development of procedures for using them, also to the study of radio wave propagation in the ionosphere and of oscillations of the earth's atmosphere. He was primarily responsible for the project for the EDSAC at Cambridge and for the organisation which has made it practicable for investigators in various fields to use it for their own work. He was the first to set up the equations for the reflections of very long radio waves from the ionosphere, on which later advances have been based. |
