Title | Wilkinson, Sir Denys Haigh: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Distinguished for work on the properties of light atomic nuclei. Has directed a number of students in the skilful exploitation of angular correlation and other methods for obtaining spins and parities of nuclear energy levels. One of the first to test systematically the validity of isotopic - spin selection rules. Inventor of several electronic and other devices useful in nuclear physics. Helped elucidate the discharge mechanism in Geiger counters. His studies of the photodisintegration of the deuteron heave led to more accurate knowledge of nuclear forces. In addition he has applied both experimental and mathematical methods to the study of bird navigation. |
