Title | Dainton, Frederick Sydney, Baron Dainton of Hallam Moors: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for wide researches in reaction kinetics. Has applied the conception of "ceiling temperature" to addition polymerisation to evaluate heats and entropies of polymerisation and their dependence on monomer structure. He has discovered oxidative radical chain termination by metal ions in aqueous polymerisation, and his identifications and measurement of yields of H-atoms, OH radicals and hydrogen peroxide in X-irradiated water are notable. He has contributed to the theory of photo- and thermal-electron transfer reactions and verified his ideas by a wide variety of techniques. He has also effectively studied reactions of oxidation, photochlorination, cationic polymerisation and radiochemistry. Dainton's interests in physical chemistry are wide, and his work is characterised by great originality, by skill and resourcefulness in execution and by soundness in interpretation.
