Citation | In extensive investigations of the structure of galaxies and work with Lyttleton on accretion, was probably first in recognizing the importance of continuing interaction between stars and interstellar matter. Contributions to the theory of stellar constitution include the calculation, recognising the significance of electron- scattering opacity, of an improved mass-luminosity relation, which helped to show that agreement with observation demands high-hydrogen content; the appreciation (with Lyttelton) of the non-homogenous composition of certain stars; work on nuclear reactions in very hot stars, leading to the view that heavy elements are synthesised inside stars. Formulated a field-theory in which the creation of matter occurs continuously, the steady-state model of the universe being a deduction of this theory. (List of publications appended) |
