Title | Jones, John Kenyon Netherton: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | J.K.N. Jones, Ph.D., D.Sc. (Birmingham) Reader in Chemnistry in the University of Bristol Distinguished as an organic chemist. He was a pioneer in work on the molecular structure of plant gums, mucilages, and pectic substances, developing methods by which the nature and arrangement of the sugar residues in many of these complex molecules have been determined. Dr Jones has made outstanding contributions to the application of chromatography in carbohydrate chemistry and has elaborated micro-chemical methods for the separation and determination of sugars and sugar derivatives. He has studied enzymic syntheses of simple sugars from three carbon and two carbon systems and his discoveries have already thrown much light on the problem of the origin of the pentose sugars in nature. A list of 102 publications is appended. |
