Citation | Distinguished for his knowledge of the behaviour of concrete and reinforced concrete [Building Research Technical Papers Nos. 3 - 22 (1930-1939)] and for his work on road construction and road safety [Canto Lecture 1951 and 1954; Presidential Address Inst.C.E. 1950.] During World War II he developed the use of models for the study of a wide variety of war problems, playing a leading part in the research resulting in the breaching of the Moehne and Eder dams, in the development of concrete piercing bombs, the invention of plastic armour, the measurement of blast pressure from bombs, the movement of torpedoes and the demolition of structures. |
