Title | Rochester, George Dixon: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished by experimental researches in band spectroscopy, cosmic radiation and elementary particles. In the first field he was concerned with the discovery and analysis of the diatomic spectra of sulphides and halides. By counter experiments he contributed valuable results to the study of cosmic radiation at sea level and, especially, of penetrating showers. In 1947, with Butler, he discovered with a cloud chamber two new unstable elementary particles, the neutral and charged V-particles, and so opened up a very important field of both experimental and theoretical research. Recently he has directed a group of workers with nuclear emulsions and has made further valuable contributions to the study of elementary particles. List of papers and publications attached. |
