Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Has contributed extensively to modern developments in astrophysics and cosmology, especially to the theories of accretion, stellar structure, and the expanding universe. On all these topics he has justly an international reputation. His work is characterised by mathematical applications of great ingenuity to problems for which no specialised techniques are available. He is the author of an authoritative Cambridge monograph on "Cosmology".
