Title | Cassels, James Macdonald: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for work using particle accelerating machines. With the 37" cyclotron at Cambridge he studied the scattering of neutrons by nuclei and investigated theoretically and experimentally their scattering by crystals. He was one of the two leading members of the first British team on high energy machine physics. Using the Harwell 180 Mev synchro-cyclotron they determined accurate cross-sections of nuclei for fast protons and neutrons, and were also the first to investigate the scattering of neutrons of well defined energies. Recently, with the Liverpool 400 Mev synchro-cyclotron, he has worked on experiments with 'pie' mesons. |
