| Citation | Crick's outstanding contribution has been the elucidation of the macro-molecular structure of deoxyribosenucleic acid in collaboration with J D Watson. This led Watson and Crick to suggest a mechanism of replication of the genetic material, which has profoundly affected scientific though in biochemistry and genetics. The starting point for their analysis was a theory of X-ray scattering from helical chain molecules which had been developed by Cochran, Crick and Vand and which has since led to the elucidation of several other fibre structures; Crick himself played a leading part in the determination of the structures of polyglycine II and of collagen. He has also made interesting contributions to the X-ray analysis of crystalline proteins and viruses. By his searching criticism and wealth of ideas he is exercising a wide and stimulating influence on the development of molecular biology in general. |
